Verify license and insurance
Ask for proof of license and proof of insurance, and check it independently. LeakFix Oak Park is an information and connection service. All contractors are independent, and it is the homeowner's responsibility to verify that the contractor has the license and insurance required for the work.
Ask about methods and tools
- Do they use non-invasive tools such as acoustic listening, thermal imaging and moisture meters?
- Will they start with a meter test and isolation testing?
- Will they open walls only after pinpointing?
Permits and Village rules
Many plumbing repairs in Oak Park require a permit. The Village states that for water service line repairs a plumbing permit is required, that the contractor must be bonded, licensed and registered with the Village, and that the Village cannot recommend plumbers. Contact the Permits Processing Division at 708.358.5430 and verify registration through the Village portal.
Written findings and scope
Ask for a written description of the leak location, cause and recommended repair. Keep it with photos and receipts. This is useful for repair planning and for any insurance conversation. See insurance claim support.
Red flags
- Pressure to sign immediately.
- Refusal to explain what is included.
- A demand for large upfront payment.
- No written scope.
- A recommendation to open walls before using any detection tools.
Compare bids
For repairs, get more than one bid with the same scope. Detection and repair are different jobs and can be priced separately. See water leak detection and water leak repair, and our guide leak detection cost in Oak Park.
